Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information The Horizon Brief ("we," "us," "our") collects when you subscribe to our newsletter or visit our website, how we use it, and the choices and rights available to you.
Information we collect
Information you provide. When you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address and, if you choose to provide it, your first name.
Engagement information. When we send emails, we and our email delivery providers collect engagement events, such as whether an email was delivered, opened, or clicked, along with a truncated IP address associated with that event. We do not collect or store full IP addresses in connection with email engagement.
Website information. Our website does not use cookies, and we do not run client-side analytics scripts that track visitors across our pages. Our web server may log standard, aggregate technical information (such as request timestamps) for security and operational purposes, consistent with standard web server operation.
Why we collect it
We use this information to:
- Deliver the newsletter to subscribers who have opted in
- Confirm subscription requests through double opt-in, so that only addresses that have actively confirmed receive our emails
- Understand which content is useful to readers, in aggregate, so we can improve what we publish
- Maintain suppression lists for bounces, complaints, and unsubscribe requests, so we stop emailing addresses that ask us to, or that are no longer valid
- Comply with applicable law, including anti-spam regulations
We do not use subscriber information for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not sell your personal information.
How long we keep it
We retain subscriber email addresses and engagement history for as long as your subscription is active, plus a limited period afterward to maintain accurate suppression records (so we don't accidentally re-add an address that unsubscribed). If you request deletion, we will remove your personal information as described below, subject to what we must retain for legal or suppression-list purposes.
How you unsubscribe
Every email we send includes a one-click unsubscribe link in the footer, and our emails include the List-Unsubscribe header so that most email clients can offer a one-click unsubscribe option directly in the inbox. You can also email [email protected] to request removal; we honor such requests within 48 hours. See our Unsubscribe page for details.
Your rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete the personal information we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at [email protected]. We will respond to verified requests in a reasonable timeframe and consistent with applicable law.
Third parties we work with
We use a limited number of service providers to operate our newsletter and website:
- Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES) to deliver our emails.
- Cloudflare for content delivery, DNS, and related infrastructure services.
These providers process data on our behalf, under their own security and privacy commitments, and do not use subscriber data for their own independent marketing purposes. We do not sell personal information to any third party, and we do not share subscriber data with third parties for their own marketing use.
Children's privacy
The Horizon Brief is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be reflected on this page.
